Deferrari+Modesti: Ten Years of Spatial Research in Florence

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

Florence-based architecture studio Deferrari+Modesti, founded by Javier Deferrari and Lavinia Modesti, celebrates a decade of practice. The duo met in Milan and moved to Florence after the 2008 crisis, aiming to bring contemporary architecture to a city they saw as a 'victim of tourism'. Their work focuses on spatial, non-decorative solutions using materials, colors, and light. Notable projects include the BRAC bookstore, where a fabric-covered court connects interiors, and La Petite cocktail bar, featuring a sculptural stone wall. They recently designed a showroom for Targetti, conceived as a wunderkammer. Modesti previously collaborated with Enzo Mari, whose rigor and ethical approach influence her work. The studio also coordinates the Interior and Furniture Design course at IED. Despite the pandemic, they report increased demand for residential projects.
