‘Death Becomes Her’ Broadway Musical to Close in June, Launch North American Tour
The campy musical adaptation of the 1992 cult film ‘Death Becomes Her’ will end its Broadway run on June 28 after 650 performances over 20 months. The production, which opened at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in November 2024, failed to recoup its $31.5 million investment, a common challenge for new musicals post-pandemic. Only five musicals—‘Just In Time,’ ‘MJ,’ ‘Six,’ ‘& Juliet,’ and ‘The Outsiders’—have recouped since the pandemic. The show received 10 Tony Award nominations, the most of any production in the 2024-2025 season, winning only for costume design. Stars Megan Hilty and Jennifer Simard, both Tony-nominated for their comedic performances, played roles originated by Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn. A North American tour will launch in September at Playhouse Square in Cleveland, Ohio, offering a chance to recover costs. Universal Theatrical Group’s senior VP Lowe Cunningham expressed pride in the production and excitement for its continued life on tour.
