Dean West: Staging Distance, Identity, and Desire

Dean West, an Australian photographer residing in the United States, explores themes of distance, identity, and desire through meticulously crafted images. Born in 1983 in New South Wales, his upbringing amidst farming and mining landscapes fostered a deep understanding of isolation and scale. After moving to North America, he became intrigued by national myths, especially those surrounding the American West and suburban leisure culture. His education at the Queensland College of Art honed his technical skills. West's cinematic photographs draw inspiration from artists like David Hockney and Edward Hopper. His work has been showcased at venues such as the Columbus Museum of Art and Paris Expo Porte De Versailles. He has worked with brands like Disney and Samsung, and received numerous accolades, including the Arte Laguna Prize in Venice. A significant piece is Luis (The Wrangler) #1, Boca Raton, 2021, from The Palms series, marking his first project with a full film crew. He is currently developing a book based on his American West series.
