De Young's Superficial Matters Explores Surface as Identity in Bay Area Art

At the de Young museum, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (FAMSF) showcase 'Superficial Matters: Artists from the Svane Gift and Beyond,' marking the third installment in a series stemming from a significant acquisition of 42 pieces by 30 emerging and midcareer artists and collectives from the Bay Area. This initiative received a $1 million contribution from the Svane Family Foundation. The exhibition highlights eight artists who delve into the materiality of ceramics, photography, and painting, examining how surfaces of objects and bodies serve as vital sites for identity formation. While Western visual culture often dismisses outward appearances as trivial, this exhibition seeks to challenge that perspective. The series commenced with 'Crafting Radicality: Bay Area Artists from the Svane Gift' in 2023, followed by 'About Place: Bay Area Artists from the Svane Gift' in 2024, reinforcing the museum's dedication to showcasing local talent and the importance of surface in identity.
