De Verfdokter Mural on WWII Bunker in Vreeswijk

cultural-heritage · 2026-05-18

In Nieuwegein’s Vreeswijk, a mural has been painted by De Verfdokter on a casemate bunker, part of a project launched by the Province of Utrecht along with the Municipality of Nieuwegein. This specific bunker, called Kazemat Vreeswijk Oost, is a V.I.S. casemate that adheres to the 1928 military guideline 'Voorschrift Inrichten Stellingen.' It’s also part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie, which stretches 85 kilometers and was built between 1815 and 1940. The mural was created after several historical Waterlinie structures were moved due to the expansion of the Lekkanaal and the development of a third lock chamber for the Prinses Beatrixsluis in 2016.
