De La Warr Pavilion Begins Restoration of Iconic Modernist Staircase Glazing

In Bexhill-on-Sea, the De La Warr Pavilion has launched a restoration initiative for its famous staircase glazing as part of the 'An Icon For Everyone' redevelopment. This project also encompasses the refurbishment of the 1,000-seat auditorium and the relocation of a lift. Collaborating with Rother District Council and managed by Haworth Tompkins, the Pavilion, which was designed by Erich Mendelsohn and Serge Chermayeff and opened its doors in 1935, requires restoration due to nearly 100 years of coastal wear. The initial phase includes window repairs at a workshop in Surrey. A Grade I listed site since 1986, the Pavilion is still hosting events and has secured a £7,646,425 grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund for Phase 1 of the £51.9 million project.
