De Chirico exhibition previews Castello di Rivoli-Cerruti museum expansion

exhibition · 2026-05-05

The exhibition 'Giorgio de Chirico. Capolavori dalla Collezione di Francesco Federico Cerruti' has opened at Castello di Rivoli near Turin, showcasing eight major paintings by de Chirico from the Cerruti collection, previously hidden in the collector's private villa. These works are displayed alongside contemporary pieces from the museum's permanent collection, including installations by Giulio Paolini, Michelangelo Pistoletto, and Maurizio Cattelan. The exhibition anticipates the 2019 opening of the new museum complex Castello di Rivoli Museo d'Arte Contemporanea – Collezione Cerruti, housed in a villa built in 1967 behind the Manica Lunga by Francesco Federico Cerruti, who died in 2015 at age 93. Director Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev described the future space as 'a place capable of creating spaces for dialogue between artists and the past.' The de Chirico show includes works such as 'Muse metafisiche' (1918) paired with Paolini's 'Casa di Lucrezio' (1981), and 'Due cavalli' (1927) contrasted with Cattelan's 'Novecento' (1997). A concurrent exhibition, 'Metamorfosi – Lasciate che tutto vi accada,' curated by Chus Martínez, is held in the Manica Lunga, featuring international emerging artists. Christov-Bakargiev noted that juxtaposing de Chirico's masterpieces with contemporary works creates 'short circuits.'
