De Appel Hosts 'If I Can't Dance...' Edition II Exploring Feminist Legacies Through Performance

exhibition · 2026-04-20

Between November 17, 2006, and January 14, 2007, De Appel in Amsterdam hosted 'If I Can't Dance...' Edition II, Part II, curated by Annie Fletcher and Frederique Bergholtz. This initiative, subtitled 'Feminist legacies and potentials in contemporary art practice,' was inspired by a feminist event held at De Appel in 1978. The program featured a symposium, an exhibition, and a performance weekend with artists such as Maria Pask, Judith Hopf, Will Holder, Haegue Yang, Sarah Pierce, and Pascale Gatzen. Notably, Judith Hopf recreated Dan Graham's 'Mirror Performance/Audience' from 1977. Archival materials were showcased, and the project has influenced cultural practices in the Netherlands, drawing from Emma Goldman's ideas. Critics observed links to past feminist movements through formal analogies.
