Dawn Tour of Siena Cathedral Led by the Key Keeper

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

The Opera della Metropolitana di Siena and Opera Laboratori have launched a new guided tour called 'Il clavigero: il risveglio del Duomo di Siena' (The Key Keeper: The Awakening of Siena Cathedral), offering early morning access from 7:15 to 8:45 AM. Limited to 18 participants per group, the tour runs Tuesday to Friday from June 27 to July 31, 2025, costing €38 per person. The key keeper opens the doors and leads visitors through the cathedral, including the marble floor, Piccolomini Library, and rooftops, before the crowds arrive. A breakfast in Piazza San Giovanni concludes the experience. The cathedral's extraordinary inlaid marble floor, created over centuries by 56 local artists, will be uncovered from June 27 to July 31 and August 18 to October 15, 2025. For the first time, the 'Hope' tarsia by Leopoldo Maccari (1870) will be visible, honoring the Jubilee 2025 theme. The cathedral, dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, was built from the mid-12th century in Romanesque-Gothic style, with construction finishing in the late 15th century, while floor decoration continued into the 19th century. The baptismal font was restored in 2024.
