Dawn Mellor unveils George Michael mural for Brent Biennial, exploring celebrity and public art

Dawn Mellor has crafted a mural for the Brent Biennial that features George Michael, delving into themes of fame, the media's hostility, and the difficulties of public work. Renowned for her portraits of celebrities, Mellor spent three weeks painting on-site with fast-drying emulsion paint. The mural emphasizes Michael's early career, particularly his professional life. To understand him better, Mellor visited his former schools in Brent and immersed herself in his music and interviews, intrigued by his disillusionment with fame and his rejection of media disgrace. She steered clear of local hero narratives, instead probing the various forms of societal success. Throughout the project, she engaged with fans and locals, observing the persistent fascination with celebrities. Mellor's previous exhibitions include Team Gallery in 2017, and she released an experimental novel titled Sirens last year.
