David Zwirner Plans Artist Residency on Montauk Lake

David Zwirner, the German gallerist with six galleries in New York, London, Paris, and Hong Kong, is planning an artist residency on Montauk Lake in Long Island, New York. The project, reported by East Hampton Star, involves restoring 17 Bridgeford Cottages near Zwirner's private residence, which includes a yoga pavilion. The area has historical ties to artists like Willem de Kooning, Lee Krasner, and Jackson Pollock, and hosts other residency programs by the South Etna Montauk Foundation and the Andy Warhol Preserve. However, the plan faces local opposition. Community members argue that a damaged bulkhead meant to control tides should be removed to restore the natural coastline, and they fear restricted beach access. Additionally, the yoga pavilion's use as artist housing may violate its residential zoning, potentially turning it into commercial space. Kathy Cunningham, vice president of the Planning Department's Board of Directors, expressed cautious optimism, noting that much work remains. Zwirner appears determined to proceed despite these challenges.
