David Zwirner Opens New Paris Gallery in Marais District

market-auction · 2026-05-04

David Zwirner, ranked first on ArtReview's Power 100 list in 2018, is opening a new gallery in Paris. The space is located at 108 rue Vieille du Temple in the Marais district, a historic neighborhood already home to galleries such as Perrotin, Thaddaeus Ropac, and Marian Goodman. The 800-square-meter ground-floor open space was previously occupied by French gallerist Yvon Lambert and later by gallery VNH. Zwirner already operates three galleries in New York, one in London, and one in Hong Kong. The opening is scheduled for October 16, 2019, coinciding with the preview day of FIAC, Paris's most important contemporary art fair. The inaugural exhibition will be a solo show of American artist Raymond Pettibon (born 1957, Arizona). Pettibon's work draws from American iconography including literature, art history, philosophy, religion, politics, sports, and alternative youth culture, influenced by punk-rock album covers and comics from Southern California in the late 1970s and 1980s. Zwirner stated, 'In recent years, Paris has quickly become one of the most vibrant cities for visual arts in Europe. It is a city where history meets the present, and we are infinitely excited to occupy one of the most beautiful and legendary spaces in the Marais gallery.' He also told the Financial Times that 'Brexit changes the game. After October, my London gallery will be a British gallery, not European,' highlighting geopolitical shifts affecting the art market.
