David Zwirner Gallery Opens Fifth Space in Hong Kong

institutional · 2026-05-05

David Zwirner Gallery will open its first Asian outpost in Hong Kong on January 27, 2018, becoming the fifth location for the powerhouse gallery after two in New York, one in London, and a recent third Manhattan space. The inaugural exhibition will feature new paintings by Belgian artist Michaël Borremans. The gallery occupies the fifth and sixth floors of H Queen's (HQ), a new gallery and lifestyle tower in Central Hong Kong designed by William Lim of CL3 Architects. Annabelle Selldorf, who designed the New York and London spaces, oversaw the interiors—over 1,000 square meters across two floors with four column-free, adaptable exhibition spaces. David Zwirner Hong Kong will be led by Leo Xu, former director of Leo Xu Projects in Shanghai, and Jennifer Yum, former vice president and head of post-war and contemporary art sales at Christie's New York. Xu founded Leo Xu Projects in 2011, previously directed James Cohan Gallery Shanghai, and was founding director of Chambers Fine Art Beijing. Yum spent 12 years at Christie's developing business in Asia, particularly South Korea and Japan. Zwirner cited explosive growth in Asian collectors' interest in Western art as the motivation for the expansion. The move follows other major galleries establishing Hong Kong presences, including Gagosian, White Cube, and Italy's Massimo De Carlo.
