David Zwirner and Hauser & Wirth Expand with New Galleries in New York and Los Angeles

Despite the ongoing pandemic, major art galleries are expanding their physical presence. David Zwirner will open a fourth New York space at 52 Walker Street in Tribeca in October 2021, directed by critic Ebony L. Haynes. The gallery occupies the first floor of a historic five-story building formerly housing M1-5 Lounge, renovated by Selldorf Architects. Unlike Zwirner's other galleries, 52 Walker focuses on curatorial research, will not represent exhibited artists, and plans only four shows per year, functioning as a hybrid between a commercial gallery and a kunsthalle. The inaugural exhibition from October to December 2021 features Kandis Williams, followed by Nikita Gale, Nora Turato, Tiona Nekkia McClodden, and Tau Lewis. Hauser & Wirth will open a second Los Angeles location in autumn 2022 at 8980 Santa Monica Boulevard, a former vintage car showroom with Spanish colonial facade, spanning over 460 square meters. Designed by Annabelle Selldorf of Selldorf Architects, the space aims to engage local communities, as stated by president Marc Payot. Hauser & Wirth operates 16 venues worldwide including Zurich, London, New York, Hong Kong, Gstaad, St. Moritz, Monaco, and Menorca.
