David Tremlett's New Mural Transforms Former Nursery in Niella Belbo
British artist David Tremlett (b. 1945, St. Austell, Cornwall) has created a large multicolored wall drawing titled Linescape on the former nursery of the Suore Luigine nuns in Niella Belbo, a small village in the Alta Langa region of Piedmont, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The building, abandoned for years and now repurposed as a multifunctional center, will open to the public on December 22, 2023, though the official inauguration is planned for the new year with the artist present. The mural uses eight colors—four greens and four browns—to evoke the local landscape: green for meadows and trees, brown for earth, with white lines suggesting the perspective of the Langhe hills. The project is part of Tremlett's long-standing connection to the Langhe, which began over twenty years ago with his work at the Cappella del Barolo. The building, taken on loan from the parish by the municipality, will house a commercial space on the ground floor, a library and permanent exhibition of local painter Beppe Ferrante on the first floor, and a sports facility in the basement with a padel court and a pickleball court. Mayor Emanuele Sottimano stated that the center aims to give a strong artistic, cultural, and sporting boost to the town.
