David Tremlett returns to Milan's Zazà Ramen with site-specific wall drawing

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Milan's Zazà Ramen sake bar & restaurant celebrates its tenth anniversary with a new site-specific intervention by British artist David Tremlett (born 1945). Titled BBZR23, the double wall drawing is visible from October 21, 2023 to April 21, 2024, accompanied by a critical text by Irene Sofia Comi. The work occupies the walls to the right of the entrance, featuring two complementary forms—one solid, one hollow—emerging from a grid of straight and curved lines that create suggestive color blocks, enhanced by a fine graphite line. This marks Tremlett's return to Zazà, where he first created three drawings in niches on the lower floor in 2014, still visible among photographs of Kusama performances and light wood tables. The restaurant owner and collector Brendan Becht initiated the contemporary art program in 2014 by inviting Tremlett. The artist, though based in England, has strong ties to Italy, periodically working in the Langhe region and having a large mural at Collegio Borromeo in Pavia. His long friendship with Becht led him to repeat the experience at the Via Solferino location.
