David Tremlett paints 17th-century chapel in Coazzolo

artist · 2026-05-05

British artist David Tremlett has created a new wall drawing on the exterior of the Chiesetta della Beata Maria Vergine del Carmine in Coazzolo, a small town in the Langhe region of Italy. The project, nearly twenty years after his collaboration with Sol LeWitt at the Ceretto family's chapel in La Morra, was initiated by Silvano Stella, Coazzolo's culture councillor and owner of the local castle. Tremlett began work in September 2016, coinciding with the grape harvest, and will attend the inauguration on June 24, 2017, when he will receive honorary citizenship. The 300-square-meter exterior surface offered Tremlett a chance to work solely outdoors, unlike the La Morra chapel where he and LeWitt divided interior and exterior. The project is privately funded, supported by Laure Genillard Gallery in London, directed by Tremlett's wife, Laure Genillard. Stella aims to foster dialogue between locals and high-level artists to rediscover aesthetic sensitivity. Tremlett, whose parents were farmers, felt a connection to the community's simplicity and honesty.
