David Tremlett completes new wall drawing in Serravalle Langhe

artist · 2026-04-27

British artist David Tremlett has completed a new wall drawing titled 'Per le Langhe' in the ex-Oratorio di San Michele in Serravalle Langhe, a village in the Langhe region of Piedmont, Italy. The work was created during the COVID-19 pandemic, with Tremlett designing it remotely from England and sending instructions to local collaborators Ferruccio Dotta and Li Zhao, who executed the piece. The wall drawing uses gray tones to dialogue with existing 15th-century frescoes on the vaulted ceiling. The project was commissioned by the municipality of Serravalle Langhe in collaboration with the Fondazione CRT and is part of the 'Chiese a porte aperte' initiative. This marks Tremlett's fourth intervention in the Langhe, following the Cappella del Barolo (1999) with Sol LeWitt, the Chiesetta di Coazzolo (2017), and the Open Space San Maurizio (2019). Tremlett expressed that the work conveys relief, joy, and optimism, hoping visitors will feel positive emotions. He also mentioned his ongoing project at Palazzo Butera in Palermo for collectors Francesca and Massimo Valsecchi.
