David Tremlett Affresca Cappella Sconsacrata nel Relais San Maurizio nelle Langhe

exhibition · 2026-05-04

David Tremlett, born in St. Austell in 1945, has completed his third project in the Langhe region by painting the deconsecrated chapel at Relais San Maurizio, located near Cuneo. Titled 'Wall Drawing in Pastel for OPEN SPACE San Maurizio,' the artwork was unveiled to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the monastery that houses the relais. Tremlett, who began his connection with Italy in the 1970s through gallerist Marilena Bonomo, previously painted the chapel in Barolo in 1999 and a small church among the vineyards in Coazzolo in 2017. The wall drawing, created on drywall, features elongated shapes in earthy and light tones, drawing inspiration from the existing 19th-century ceiling. Tremlett stated that this work continues his efforts from Bari, aiming to enhance the space's identity without being overly decorative. The project was executed in partnership with Noire Gallery in Turin and the Gallo Foundation. Pier Domenico Gallo, president of the Gallo Foundation, noted that the initiative seeks to establish a connection between art and the landscape, blending the ancient with the contemporary. Recently, Tremlett also launched a project in Peccioli with Alicia Kwade and Patrick Tuttofuoco.
