David Teh on Transnationalism and Thai Art at Tate Modern

other · 2026-04-22

On Thursday 22 June 2023, Tate Research Centre: Asia, in association with Afterall, will host a seminar titled 'Transnationalism and its Limits: Mobility and Contemporaneity in Thai Art' featuring David Teh. The event, held at Tate Modern in London from 16:00 to 18:00, explores how Thai artists since the 1990s have become conspicuously mobile, downplaying national identity amid decades of political and economic turmoil. Teh argues that this mobility not only evades local constraints but also recalls an older spatial imaginary—a worldliness that is not a symptom of art's globalisation but a condition of its possibility. He is co-editor and lead author of Afterall's ninth Exhibition Histories book, focusing on Chiang Mai Social Installation (1992–98). May Adadol Ingawanij will respond, with questions chaired by Lucy Steeds. The event is free but requires advance booking via the Tate website.
