David Tang, arts patron and socialite, dies at 62
David Tang, a prominent figure in the arts and a co-founder of the Asia Art Archive in Hong Kong, has died. He was a trustee at the Royal Academy of Arts in London for over 20 years, chaired the Tate’s Asia-Pacific Acquisitions Committee, and served as president of the London Bach Society. His expertise also benefited the London Symphony Orchestra and Carnegie Hall in New York. Originally from Hong Kong, Tang moved to England at age 13 and studied philosophy and law at London and Cambridge. He taught at Peking University in the '80s and later started the Shanghai Tang fashion brand. He also founded the Pacific Cigar Company and opened Cipriani in Hong Kong. Tang was knighted in 2008 for his philanthropy. Sadly, he passed away just before a farewell event he had organized at The Dorchester, which will still go on.
