David Shrigley's Giant Worm AR Installation at Art Basel Miami 2021
British artist David Shrigley made his overseas debut at Art Basel Miami 2021 (December 2–4) with a project for Ruinart. The Ruinart Lounge displayed works from his Unconventional Bubbles collection, created after a 2020 residency at the champagne house's estate in Reims. The collection includes 36 drawings, two ceramics, three neon pieces, and an installation, reinterpreting Ruinart's values through Shrigley's signature ironic style. Ruinart President Frédéric Dufour stated, "Art resides in the very nature of the house. We are advancing our commitment to art by supporting major contemporary art fairs and giving carte blanche to an artist each year." In line with the brand's Carte Blanche program focused on environment and sustainability, a freely accessible virtual art experience was produced for the Miami fair. The virtual artwork, accessible via the Ruinart Acute Art app, features a Giant Worm that Shrigley disseminated across Miami. The worm was a central theme of his residency, with the slogan "worms work harder than us" highlighting nature's tireless work in Ruinart's vineyards. The AR experience mimics the fair's white walls and includes informational content, allowing remote audiences to engage. The experience continues online at unconventionalgallery.ruinart.com.
