David Reed's 1975 Paintings Reunited at Gagosian with Historical Context

exhibition · 2026-04-22

From January 17 to February 25, 2017, Gagosian's gallery in uptown New York hosted 'Painting Paintings (David Reed) 1975,' displaying 17 pieces from 1974-75 that underscore Reed's significant early evolution. Curators Katy Siegel and Christopher Wool compiled a catalogue that draws parallels between Reed's art and the 1969 Whitney exhibition 'Anti-Illusion: Procedures/Materials.' The showcased paintings consist of horizontal bands in red or black alongside white, achieved by dragging brushes through wet surfaces. Peter Schjeldahl reviewed Reed's 1975 debut at the Susan Caldwell gallery in Art in America. Additionally, the catalogue features archival documents from Reed's time at the New York Studio School in 1968, and a related exhibition included works by Joel Shapiro, Christopher Wool, Joyce Pensato, and Andy Warhol.
