David Netto and Sarah Wetenhall Revitalize East Hampton’s Historic Hedges Inn

architecture-design · 2026-07-07

Sarah J. Wetenhall and her husband Andrew, who previously transformed The Colony Hotel in Palm Beach, have renovated The Hedges Inn in East Hampton, a property dating back to 1873. They enlisted designer David Netto to reimagine the 12-room inn as a social hub, complete with the restaurant Swifty's, which opened last summer. Netto drew inspiration from The Lobster Inn in Hampton Bays, designer Jed Johnson's Americana, and a hypothetical 1985 visit by Renzo Mongiardino to East Hampton. The decor features a custom de Gournay mural, vintage finds from Brimfield Market, Maine shops, and London's Decorative Fair, as well as personal art loans including a piece by Alan Campbell from Netto's family collection and a work from Wetenhall's former East End home. Each guest room has a unique design, with one suite featuring de Gournay paper mimicking hickory planks and a Guild Hall poster from a 1980 Roy Lichtenstein exhibition. The inn aims to be a gathering place for cocktails and dining, with staff from The Colony relocated for the season.
