David Michalek's Slow Dancing video installation opens LAC Lugano season

exhibition · 2026-05-05

On September 20, 2016, the LAC (Lugano Arte Cultura) in Lugano, Switzerland, inaugurated its second season with Slow Dancing, a large-scale open-air video installation by American artist David Michalek. The work features three towers over 13 meters high with screens exceeding 100 square meters, six projectors, and 57 dancers and choreographers from around the world, including Bill T. Jones and Trisha Brown. Using hyper-slow-motion video, the triptych projects 43 moving portraits onto the exterior facades of the cultural center. Slow Dancing was previously shown at Lincoln Center in New York, the Arsenale of the Venice Biennale, Opéra Bastille in Paris, and Trafalgar Square in London. Projections run nightly from 8:30 PM to midnight in Piazza Bernardino Luini until October 9. LAC general director Michel Gagnon described the piece as offering a poetic and unprecedented temporal perspective on dance. The season also features performances by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Accademia di Santa Cecilia, Béjart Ballet Lausanne, and exhibitions of artists such as Paul Signac, Meret Oppenheim, Alighiero Boetti, and Ilya & Emilia Kabakov.
