David Maljkovic's Architectural Utopias at Reina Sofia

exhibition · 2026-04-23

David Maljkovic, a Croatian artist born in 1973 in Rijeka, explores the architectural history of former Yugoslavia, reactivating modernist utopias with measured irony. The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid presents his work from September 9, 2009. Maljkovic's installations combine videos, drawings, and collages, often referencing the Exat-51 group (1951–1956) and artists like Vjenceslav Richter and Vojin Bakic. His film "Images with their own shadows" (2009) was shot at Richter's museum, while "Retired Form" (2008) features Bakic's sculpture in Zagreb's Dotršcina memorial park. "Lost Pavilion" (2009) uses a miniature of John Johansen's 1956 US pavilion with music by Jan St. Werner. Maljkovic's work has been shown at CAPC Bordeaux, Whitechapel Gallery, Kunstverein Hamburg, P.S.1 New York, and Le Plateau Paris. His trilogy "Scene for a new heritage trilogy" (2004–2006) is set in 2045 and 2060 at Petrova Gora memorial park. Maljkovic studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb and lives in New York.
