David Horvitz's First Italian Exhibition Opens in Disused Milan Office
David Horvitz's first Italian exhibition, 'Abbandonare il locale' (Abandon the Place), opened on April 13 in a disused office within the BiM – Bicocca incontra Milano regeneration project in Milan's Bicocca district. The show, curated by miart director Nicola Ricciardi, coincides with the 28th edition of the international modern and contemporary art fair miart, and embodies the fair's theme 'no time no space' by subverting standardized notions of time and space. The exhibition features over twenty works spanning Horvitz's career, including the site-specific 'Imagined Clouds (Milan)'—plastic water bottles left behind after a workday that reflect on water as a metaphor for escape. Also on view is 'Mood disorder' (2012), a self-portrait simulating depression that Horvitz uploaded to Wikipedia's mood disorder page, where it circulated freely for years. 'The Distance of a Day' (2013) presents two videos shot simultaneously by Horvitz in California and his mother in the Maldives at sunrise and sunset on the same day. Horvitz, an heir to Fluxus and relational aesthetics, gained international recognition in 2009 with the viral photographic project '241543903'. His work has been shown at MoMA New York, Tate Modern London, San Francisco Camerawork, and Palais de Tokyo Paris. The exhibition runs in the building designed by Vittorio Gregotti, which is being transformed into an advanced work destination.
