David Hockney's iPhone Drawings and Yorkshire Retreat

exhibition · 2026-04-24

In 2010, François Jonquet visited David Hockney in Bridlington, Yorkshire, for artpress. Hockney had moved there after his mother's death, living in a former hotel. He discussed his discovery of drawing on iPhone and iPad, creating 'Fleurs Fraîches' which were exhibited at the Fondation Pierre Bergé – Yves Saint Laurent in Paris from October 20, 2010 to January 30, 2011. Hockney also spoke about a film made with nine cameras on a car slowly traversing a wood, displayed on a wall of nine screens. These works were included in his retrospective at the Centre Georges-Pompidou (until October 23, 2010, curated by Didier Ottinger), his first Paris exhibition since 1999. Hockney described the iPhone as a pocket sketchbook, praising the medium's immediacy and its influence on his painting. He criticized the art world's neglect of drawing and the hand. The interview covered his views on the revolution of images, the decline of photography's authority, and his belief in returning to nature to renew art. Hockney prepared for a 2012 exhibition at the Royal Academy titled 'A Bigger Picture', featuring a video of the woodland drive and paintings inspired by Claude Lorrain.
