David Hockney's 1972 painting sets new auction record for living artists

A 1972 painting by David Hockney achieved a historic sale price of $90.3 million at Christie's in New York on November 16, 2018. This transaction established a new benchmark for works by living artists sold at auction. The previous record had been held by Jeff Koons's Balloon Dog (Orange), which sold for $58.4 million in 2013. Hockney's work, titled Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures), surpassed that figure significantly. The sale took place at the auction house's New York location. The final price included the buyer's premium. Koons's record-setting piece was sold through Sotheby's.
