David Hammons' Five Decades Exhibition at Mnuchin Gallery Challenges Art World Narratives
The Mnuchin Gallery in New York is showcasing 'David Hammons: Five Decades,' which includes 35 pieces spanning from the late 1960s to 2016. This exhibition runs from March 15 to May 27 at 45 East 78th Street. Curator Jessica Holmes noted that Hammons made unexpected changes to the installation, resulting in a unique artistic experience. Among the highlights are two large untitled paintings (2008–2015) covered by tarps and sculptural works from 2013 and 2014 that hide gilded mirrors. The provocative piece 'In the Hood' (1993), which alludes to lynching, was also featured in Claudia Rankine's 2014 book 'Citizen.' Hammons' early prints depict him imprinting his body onto paper. This marks Mnuchin's third exhibition of Hammons' work, showcasing his defiance of traditional art norms.
