David Goldblatt Retrospective at MCA Australia

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA) in Sydney presents 'David Goldblatt: Photographs 1948–2018', a comprehensive retrospective of the South African photographer who died in June 2018. The exhibition features over 350 works spanning his entire career, including series such as 'On the Mines', 'In Boksburg', 'Particulars', and 'Ex-offenders'. It also includes Goldblatt's only Australian work, which documents the asbestos mining industry in the ghost town of Wittenoom, Western Australia. Born in Randfontein in 1930 to Lithuanian Jewish immigrant grandparents, Goldblatt lived and worked in Johannesburg until his death. He shot exclusively in black-and-white from 1948 until the end of apartheid in 1994, after which he adopted color photography. The exhibition runs until March 3, 2019.
