David Claerbout's First French Solo Show at Centre Pompidou
The Centre Pompidou / Musée national d'art moderne in Paris is hosting David Claerbout's first solo exhibition in France from October 3, 2007 to January 7, 2008. The show will travel to MIT in Boston (February 7 – April 6, 2008), Kunstmuseum St. Gallen (May–August 2008), UBC in Vancouver (fall 2008), and the Metropolitan Museum of Photography in Tokyo (2009). Claerbout, a Belgian photographer and video artist born in 1969 in Kortrijk, lives and works in Antwerp and Berlin. His work merges still and moving images to explore time, often using digital techniques to animate historical photographs. Notable works include "Untitled (Single channel view)" (1998–2000), "Kindergarten Antonio Sant'Elia, 1932" (1998), "Present" (2000), "Reflecting Sunset" (2003), "Vietnam 1967, near Duc Pho" (2001), "Untitled (Carl and Julie)" (2000), "Man Under Arches" (2000), "Shadow Piece" (2005), "Villa Corthout" (2001), "The Piano Player" (2002), and "The Bordeaux Piece" (2004), a 13-hour 40-minute film set in Rem Koolhaas's Bordeaux house. Claerbout's installations often incorporate viewer interaction, as in "Untitled (Carl and Julie)" where a child turns when a spectator enters. His work has been shown at Akademie der Künste Berlin, Dundee Contemporary Arts, Van Abbemuseum Eindhoven, and Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus Munich.
