David Choe Paints 2017 Bowery Wall in New York

artist · 2026-05-05

David Choe, the Korean-American artist from Los Angeles born in 1976, is currently completing the Bowery Wall at the intersection of Bowery and Houston Street in New York, one of the most coveted walls for street artists. The mural replaces Urbanmithology by Spanish artists Pichi&Avo and is part of a show scheduled for July in Los Angeles. Choe gained notoriety in 2005 when he accepted Facebook stock as payment for murals at its headquarters, a decision that earned him $200 million. For this project, Choe has implemented a unique access system: interested participants must fill out an online form and follow rules similar to spiritual retreats. The mural features Choe's signature symbols, including the "rabbit-toothed whale," a recurring motif in his work. The wall will be on view from June to October 2017.
