David Chipperfield to Transform 1014 Fifth Avenue into Cultural Hub
David Chipperfield Architects, alongside KARO Architects and Patarus Group, won the international competition for An Open House, a project to renovate 1014 Fifth Avenue in New York. The building, constructed in 1907 in Beaux-Arts style, previously housed the Goethe-Institut until 2009 and currently hosts events via 1014-space for ideas. The design includes a new vestibule, ground-floor garden, exhibition spaces, artist residencies, a central Common Room, and a rooftop terrace. The project maintains the intimate character of a city apartment while creating a modern public space. In 2021, Chipperfield also completed the renovation of Berlin's Neue Nationalgalerie and the expansion of Zurich's Kunsthaus. The building is owned by the German government. An online exhibition, 1014: Past and Future, previews the project. 1014-space for ideas will continue programming in temporary venues until 2025.
