David Chipperfield to Lead Roman Theatre Restoration in Brescia

David Chipperfield, a British architect, has been tasked with creating a valorization project for the Roman Theatre of Brescia, which dates back to 79-81 AD and is located within the UNESCO-listed Brixia archaeological park. This decision, made by the Municipality of Brescia, Fondazione Brescia Musei, and the Chamber of Commerce, was announced in early 2024 after being finalized in December 2023. Chipperfield's firm will produce an initial design for a feasibility study that will also encompass the Palazzo Maggi Gambara. The theatre, which was revealed in the 19th century, seeks to revive its performance capabilities. The Chamber of Commerce has set aside €150,000 for 2024, with plans to double this amount in 2025. There has been some criticism regarding the lack of a public competition for the appointment. Chipperfield is scheduled to visit Brescia from February 21-23, 2024.
