David Chipperfield's James-Simon-Galerie Opens on Berlin's Museum Island

architecture-design · 2026-05-04

The James-Simon-Galerie, created by David Chipperfield Architects, has officially opened its doors on Berlin's Museum Island, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999. This gallery acts as the primary entrance to the museum complex, linking various institutions through the Archaeological Promenade. Situated on the Eiserne Brücke, the structure features a colonnade elevated on a prominent plinth, drawing inspiration from neoclassical styles and the Propylaea in Athens. Inside, visitors will find a ticket office, exhibition areas, a bookshop, and a 300-seat auditorium. The project emerged from the Masterplan Museuminsel, which began in 1993, with Chipperfield taking over after Giorgio Grassi's departure. Named in honor of patron James Simon, the gallery highlights the importance of architecture in connecting visitors to the city and its culture.
