David Chipperfield Retrospective at Vicenza's Basilica Palladiana
A major retrospective of David Chipperfield Architects, titled 'David Chipperfield Architects Works 2018', will open on May 12, 2018, at the Basilica Palladiana in Vicenza, Italy. The exhibition revives a historic series of architecture monographic shows that began in 1985 but paused from 2007 to 2012 due to restoration of the building. Previous featured architects include Mario Botta, Renzo Piano, Tadao Ando, Alvaro Siza, and SANAA. The show is curated by the nonprofit cultural association Abacoarchitettura and focuses on the studio's design approach and teamwork rather than style. It will present 15 recent projects, possibly including the Procuratie Vecchie restoration in Venice's Piazza San Marco, commissioned by Generali Assicurazioni. Chipperfield, who directed the 2012 Venice Architecture Biennale, described Italy as 'the spiritual home of architecture.' The exhibition runs until September 2, 2018. Shortly after, on May 19, Chipperfield's New Royal Academy of Arts in London will open, marking the institution's 250th anniversary. David Chipperfield Architects was founded in London in 1985 and now has offices in Berlin (1998), Shanghai (2005), and Milan (2006). The firm has won over 100 awards, including the RIBA Stirling Prize 2007, the Mies van der Rohe Award 2011, and the Deutscher Architekturpreis 2011 for the Neues Museum in Berlin.
