David Chipperfield Named Guest Editor of Domus for 10x10x10 Project

publication · 2026-05-04

David Chipperfield, the renowned British architect (born London, 1953), has been appointed as the third guest editor of Domus magazine under its 10x10x10 editorial project, which runs for a decade leading to the centenary of the Ponti-founded publication. He follows Michele De Lucchi and Winy Maas. Chipperfield will oversee ten issues starting January 2020, with Walter Mariotti remaining as editorial director. Each issue will feature covers by German artist and photographer Thomas Demand, with a modular design. Photographer Iwan Baan will contribute to the architecture section, and British designer Jasper Morrison will have a regular column. The magazine will be structured around four thematic macro-areas: Agenda, Architecture, Design and Art, and Reflections. Topics include the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, social housing, common space, protection/identity, climate change, and social inequalities. The presentation took place in Milan at the Pirellone building. Chipperfield's connection to Italy deepens after directing the 13th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice in 2012; his Milan studio is currently working on the renovation of the Procuratie Vecchie in Piazza San Marco. The editorial manifesto, titled "What is our role?", questions how architects, designers, and urban planners should respond to climate crisis and economic inequality, urging the profession to move beyond paradoxes of resistance and complicity.
