David Chipperfield Completes New Royal Academy of Arts Campus in London
After a decade of planning and three years of construction, the New Royal Academy of Arts (NewRA), crafted by David Chipperfield, has officially opened in London. This £56 million initiative encompasses an 8,000-square-metre campus that connects Burlington Gardens with Burlington House, revitalizing Sir James Pennethorne's Victorian structure. Among its features are a 250-seat auditorium, an Architecture Studio, spaces for temporary exhibitions, and a permanent gallery dedicated to the Royal Academicians' collection. Additionally, the new Weston Bridge links to the RA School, increasing exhibition space by 70%. The grand opening took place on May 19–20, 2018, aligning with the RA's 250th anniversary, and included various tours, activities, and exhibitions. President Christopher Le Brun and Artistic Director Tim Marlow highlighted the importance of the NewRA.
