David Bowie's Final Ziggy Stardust Concert Film Returns to Cinemas

other · 2026-04-27

On July 3, 1973, David Bowie performed his final concert as Ziggy Stardust at the Hammersmith Odeon in London, before 5,000 spectators. The event marked the end of the Aladdin Sane Tour and the public retirement of his alter ego. Filmed by director D.A. Pennebaker in 16mm, initially commissioned by RCA to record only a few songs, the footage was expanded into a full documentary. Pennebaker captured backstage moments including Bowie's makeup session with Pierre La Roche, costume changes, a duet with Jeff Beck, and a conversation with Ringo Starr. The film, titled "Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders From Mars," has been fully restored in 4K with 5.1 audio. It will screen in UCI Cinema theaters from July 3 to 5, 2023, offering audiences the chance to hear the "Farewell Speech" delivered before "Rock 'n' Roll Suicide."
