David Bomati's New Series Explores Ephemeral Memory and Cognitive Processes
David Bomati's latest series, "Cuando despertó ya no estaba allí" (When He Woke Up, It Was No Longer There), draws its title from Augusto Monterroso's famous micro-story, focusing on the ephemeral and emotional residues of fleeting moments. The series evolves from his previous work "Lo que duermes mientras sueñas," continuing his exploration of synapses, memory, and cognitive processes as visual territories. Bomati employs acrylic, spray paint, ink, graphite, airbrush, waxes, and polyvinyl acetate in delicate, irreversible gestures reminiscent of Japanese sumi-e. The paintings feature layered, almost transparent surfaces with small marks, lines, and stains that form mental cartographies. His recurring obsession with maps reappears, as seen in earlier series like "Topografías de Resiliencia," inviting viewers to navigate invisible routes. Bomati studied at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid's Faculty of Fine Arts and Wimbledon College of Arts in London. His practice spans painting, installation, video, and relational art under the alias Flick, moving through informalism, minimalism, neo-expressionism, and post-pop, with abstraction as a constant. Since his first exhibition in Madrid in 1999, he has shown work in Cuba, Germany, Bolivia, and Portugal, and participated in fairs like Estampa and the Bienal Internacional de Arte de Santa Cruz. His work is held in collections including Fundación Banco Santander and Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Infanta Elena.
