David Alekhuogie’s 'Them Boys' exhibition at Skibum MacArthur examines masculinity and racial stereotypes through art.

exhibition · 2026-04-20

From 8 September to 21 October 2017, David Alekhuogie's exhibition titled 'Them Boys' was showcased at Skibum MacArthur in Los Angeles. This display included concrete sculptures of mannequin hip busts, creatively transformed into vases with copper piping for floral arrangements, forming part of the Altered States series. Additionally, Alekhuogie introduced the Pull-Up series, which consists of tightly cropped images of sagging pants, critiquing American cultural discussions regarding the attire of young men of color, echoing President Obama's comments about pulling up pants. Other notable pieces featured Epson ink-tinted cyanotype works, Nikes and Athlete, printed on watercolour paper with synthetic colors. The exhibition explored themes of idealized masculinity, racial stereotypes, and the tension between allure and disgust in advertising, as highlighted in ArtReview's December 2017 edition.
