David Adjaye's Controversial Projects and Sexual Misconduct Allegations in Ghana

opinion-review · 2026-04-20

David Adjaye's architectural endeavors in Ghana have sparked controversy due to delays in several projects that have disrupted local communities. The National Cathedral, revealed in 2016 and funded by the government without parliamentary approval, has resulted in a vacant seven-hectare site in Accra following the demolition of colonial bungalows. So far, Adjaye Associates has received approximately half of the £45.5 million allocated, with only the foundation completed. The Marine Drive initiative has displaced many residents and poses a risk to cultural heritage. Although Adjaye's finished works are private commissions, they stand in stark contrast to his 2017 Artforum remarks on urban involvement. In March, his firm announced operational shifts amid 2023 sexual misconduct allegations, which Adjaye refuted. Local architects have voiced concerns regarding non-competitive bidding practices. Despite Adjaye's knighthood and endorsement from Obama, criticism regarding his influence in Ghana persists.
