Darja Bajagić to Represent Montenegro at 60th Venice Biennale with Exhibition on Mamula Island History

exhibition · 2026-04-20

Montenegro will be represented by Darja Bajagić at the 60th Venice Biennale, scheduled from 20 April to 24 November 2024. Her exhibition, titled 'It Takes an Island to Feel This Good,' is curated by Ana Simona Zelenović and hosted by the Museum of Contemporary Art at Complesso dell’Ospedaletto in Venice. Bajagić's artwork delves into the collective memory and historical significance of Mamula island, which features a fort constructed in 1853, served as a concentration camp during Mussolini's regime, and has been transformed into a luxury hotel since 2016. She emphasizes the importance of the Biennale for nations that are often overlooked. Bajagić appreciates the realistic style of Boris Lurie (1924–2008) and suggests watching Živko Nikolić's film 'The Beauty of Vice' as well as visiting Yugoslav Spomeniks and the Mausoleum of Njegoš.
