Daria Sheina's CLT prefab house 'The Nest' on Keats Island, Canada
Moscow-born architect Daria Sheina, based in Vancouver for a decade, has completed a prefabricated CLT house named 'The Nest' on Keats Island, British Columbia. The structure was assembled in two days using panels from BC Passive House, transported by boat and helicopter. It rests on minimal concrete foundations to protect the rocky site. The design reinterprets Piet Bom's cubic houses in Rotterdam's Blaakse Bos. The three-level home features rotated volumes creating a skylight and optimal solar panel angle. Entirely timber-framed without steel, it is clad in western red cedar that will weather to match surrounding conifers. Energy self-sufficient, it includes an incinerator toilet and rainwater collection. Interiors are minimalist with exposed wood and green Marmoleum floors echoing moss. Owners Chadd Andre and Sean Sikorski named it 'The Nest' for its protective, intimate quality.
