Dara Birnbaum's Arabesque: First Artist Book from D'ORO D'ART

publication · 2026-04-27

Marian Goodman Gallery and Italian publisher D'ORO Collection have collaborated to produce "Arabesque," the first volume-opera by pioneering video artist Dara Birnbaum. Limited to six copies, the handcrafted book integrates digital art, transforming Birnbaum's 2021 four-channel installation into a single-channel video that plays when the triptych cover is opened. The work was previewed at Art Basel Miami. The project launches D'ORO D'ART, a new series curated by Barbara London, founder of MoMA's Video Art Department, and Valentino Catricalà, curator at Soda Gallery, Manchester. The book features a gold lacquered cover silkscreened with the artist's images and an interior of iridescent silk that serves as both lining and video backdrop. Birnbaum described turning the page as "tremendously exciting," adding that the digital page offers a magical experience of sound and image.
