Dante’s Inferno Exhibition at Scuderie del Quirinale This Autumn

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Scuderie del Quirinale in Rome will host a major exhibition titled “Inferno,” curated by Jean Clair, from October 15, 2021. The show marks the 700th anniversary of Dante Alighieri’s death and features over 200 works from more than 80 museums and collections, including the Vatican, France, UK, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg, and Bulgaria. Highlights include a 1:1 scale plaster cast of Auguste Rodin’s “Porte de l’Enfer” on loan from the Musée Rodin in Paris, and Sandro Botticelli’s “Voragine infernale” from the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, displayed only during the first weeks. The exhibition traces representations of hell, sin, and the damned from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, with works by Beato Angelico, Botticelli, Bosch, Bruegel, Goya, Manet, Delacroix, Rodin, Cézanne, von Stuck, Balla, Dix, Taslitzky, Richter, and Kiefer. Visitors are guided by verses from the Divine Comedy and exit with the final line “e quindi uscimmo a riveder le stelle.” The exhibition is part of the official Dante celebrations and is expected to be one of the most anticipated events of autumn.
