Dante ipermoderno: Contemporary Illustrations of the Divine Comedy Travel the World

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has organized a traveling exhibition titled 'Dante ipermoderno' at the Italian Cultural Institute in Belgrade. The show surveys Dante illustrations from 1983 to 2021, conceived by the Società Dantesca and the Associazione degli Italianisti, curated by Giorgio Bacci with Marcello Ciccuto and Alberto Casadei. It features over 80 works by contemporary artists including Tom Phillips, Monika Beisner, Mimmo Paladino, Emiliano Ponzi, and Paolo Barbieri. Beisner is noted as the first female artist to illustrate the entire Divine Comedy. The exhibition opened on April 14 and runs until May 12, after which it will travel to Athens, Prague, Moscow, Madrid, London, and New York. The works explore new interpretive paths through diverse techniques: Phillips uses serigraphy with pop immediacy, Beisner employs egg tempera inspired by Giovanni di Paolo, Paladino uses drawing to probe archaic roots, Barbieri blends tradition with digital color, and Ponzi relies entirely on digital techniques for surreal, unsettling atmospheres.
