Danish sculptor Eva Sørensen dies at 80 in Mergozzo

artist · 2026-04-27

Danish artist Eva Sørensen passed away on December 31 at age 80 in Mergozzo, Italy, where she had lived for over forty years as an honorary citizen. Known globally for her green granite sculptures from Mergozzo and ink drawings described by Vincenzo Agnetti as 'two-dimensional sculptures', Sørensen explored the intimate link between humanity and nature through stone grooves and textures. Born in 1940 in Herning, Denmark, she moved to Italy in the early 1960s, settling in Milan and connecting with artists Piero Manzoni, Lucio Fontana, and Enrico Castellani. She worked primarily in sculpture, experimenting with terracotta, stoneware, bronze, and granite, creating large-scale public works in Italy characterized by organic abstraction and spatial investigation. In 1976, a retrospective was organized by the Aarhus Museum and Koldinghus. In 1978, she exhibited at Parco Sempione in Milan (with text by Pierre Restany) and at Ordrupgaard Museum in Copenhagen. In 1982, she participated in the Venice Biennale, showing drawings and sculptures in the Danish Pavilion. Her works are held in the Ny Carlsberg Foundation and the Danish State Art Foundation, as well as museums across Denmark. Gallerist Raffaella De Chirico, who represented Sørensen in Italy, recalled picking up her drawings in January 2011 for the gallery opening, calling it an honor and privilege to work with her. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 4 at 2:30 PM in the Parish Church of Mergozzo.
