Danilo Correale's 'At Work's End' at Art in General Imagines a Post-Labor World

Danilo Correale (born 1982, Naples) presents his first solo exhibition in New York, 'At Work's End,' at Art in General in Dumbo, Brooklyn. The show transforms the nonprofit's space into a futuristic spa where a guided meditation by John Mongiovi invites visitors to imagine a society freed from work through technological and economic progress. The exhibition centers on the vinyl sound piece 'Reverie: On the Liberation from Work,' expanded into a spatial installation with a video, chaise longues, a large fabric work, and two paintings from the series 'A Spectacular Miscalculation of Global Asymmetry.' Correale addresses the theme of post-work, describing his generation as caught between conflict and future, with anxiety over the present and a lost capacity for utopia. He cites influences including Duchamp, Lazzarato, Virno, Russell, Tronti, Matarrese, Stilinovich, Balestrini, Silvia Federici, as well as theosophy and secular spirituality. The artist emphasizes the importance of dialogue with colleagues in New York and encouragement from Chiara Fumai during the winter production phase. The installation aims to alter time perception and resist capitalist notions of time as value only when consuming. The exhibition runs until November 9, 2017, at Art in General, 145 Plymouth Street, Brooklyn.
